What's a Good Suburb of Chicago to Buy a Home?

by admin on

I have recently took a position in Chicago. I love the city but would rather live in a suburb or a little outside the major congestion of all the city life. I would like to commute no more than a half hour away as I am commuting over a hour living in Northwest Indiana currently. But, I want a nice town with low crime rates. I would be looking to spend around 150K on a home possibly. Are there any areas that would be a great fit for me?

If the area is close to the city and "cheap" BEWARE!!!We live in the Plainfield/Joliet area about 45-60 minutes, more or less( according to traffic)away from Chicago and to find a house, townhouse or condo that cheap would take alot of looking.

I like the area at 51st and the Dan Ryan. You can get a home real cheap.

With all the foreclosures going on here in Chicago now is the perfect time to buy..not so much if youre selling. Recently a realtor that I’m dealing with has said some homes out in the burbs have been going for as low as 200,000, but at one time were valued at 500,000. 150,000 back in the day would be cheap but nowadays you could probably get something real nice in whatever burb.

150k with a 30 min commute? You’re about 20 years too late. Double your mortgage or travel time…if you’re lucky.

If you want a single family home, in that price range you’ll have to go farther than a 30 minute commute. You may be able to find some short sale homes but even in this economy, homes in the radius you want are going for more than $180K.

If you’re looking at condo’s and townhomes, you may have better luck.

South of the city will be less expensive
Far west of the city will be less expensive

My suggestion is to use a realtor. They’re going to have the details you want.

if your loking for 150K and under you are looking for a bit more by commute(public trans)
i live about 45 minutes by car sosuth of Chicago and houses around me start at roughly 175K..new..
as for our crime rate it is pretty small for major crimes
and public trans is available to the nearest Metra station
