For less than 100k, you are going to have a tough time. You definitely can’t live in the city for 100k. Condos, even in "developing" neighborhoods are around 250.

100k is tough. You’re looking at probably a small 1br condo. Try suburbs like Oak Lawn, Palos Hills, Hickory Hills, Tinley Park, Orland Park, Bolingbrook, Lockport. They’re all really good, safe neighborhoods and have a lot of condos available.

Check realtor.com to find some available properties. If you’re looking to stay close to the city, then Oak Lawn is probably the nicest close suburb. Evanston is beautiful to the north, but very pricey.

You may find a house at that price in the City of Chicago as long as you like to comute and if you are willing to buy a house As-Is (a house that needs minor repairs). I have seen these properties in a couple of neighborhoods in Chicago. There might be some condos (actually studios) at that price as well closer to downtown; I had a friend who was looking something like this last year but had to change jobs, btw I am a realtor, with a deteailed search, you would be able to find something afordable.
