65 to 100k won’t get you a lot in many of the suburbs around here.

look towards the suburbs. Income at 65k will not get you a whole lot in downtown chicago. Look west toward Naperville, Lombard, Winfield, and Wheaton.

Southside is the best bet for your income level.
Take a look at Blue Island, Alsip, Oak Lawn, Worth.

Well, I would recommend the suburbs and the Western Suburbs at that. I think your best bet would be a town just west of the city called Oak Park. It is has a nice downtown and has lot of restaurants and shops. It is also home to many Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Oak Park is also right by the Burlington Northern Train tracks so hoping a train would be easy or I think you can even get an Elevated Train in Oak Park also. Or if you preferred to drive into the city Oak Park is right near the Eisenhower expressway. So there are three easy ways to get into the city. There are also two large Hospitals in Oak Park. You could also do the towns of La Grange, IL, another great town with shops and restaurants. It is also right of the Burlington Northern Tracks. La Grange can be pricey though, but I would look there also. La Grange also has a hospital in town call La Grange Memorial. Brookfield is also another town I would look into. It is also right on the Burlington Northern Tracks. It is home of the world famous Brookfield Zoo. It also has a hospital near by called Loyola which is a pretty famous Hospital. Brookfield would be cheaper to live there but the town is not as quaint as La Grange or Oak Park. But, I would recommend those three Suburban towns. I would look at Oak Park first, then La Grange then Brookfield. There are also a ton of other towns but, if you want to be in a decent neighborhood and be within 30 minutes of the Loop then start there. If you have any other question about other suburbs please don’t hesitate to ask me. I have lived in the Chicago area my whole life and it is a wonderful place to live. Take care and I hope this helps.

I’d personally look into the northwest suburbs. Check out communities like Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows.

I’d recommend Evanston or Oak Park, but you will be on the low side of the income curve in either of those communities.

You might want to look at the direct west suburbs like Lombard, Villa Park, Western Springs, and Downers Grove. It will take you longer than 30 minutes to DRIVE to the city from those towns at rush hour, but you should be okay if you plan to take the train. Chicago has an excellent suburban commuter rail system. Go to http://www.metrarail.com to see a map of the system.

Be warned that most of these places are pretty pricey real estate compared with most other areas of the country. You don’t say where you’re coming from, so I don’t know if you will have sticker shock or not when you start looking for houses, but anything within 30 minutes train ride of the city is going to cost you. The Lombard house in which I grew up, a 3-bedroom 1-1/2 bath split level of about 1300 square feet (I’d guess) would list now around $350,000. If you want more house for less money, you’ll have to go farther from the city. In the more distant suburbs like Gurnee or Lake Villa, you can have a 3000 square foot house on a larger lot for about the same money.

South and Southwest Suburbs are the most affordable; you can find a decent house around $200K. Commuter trains and expressways go into Chicago from several directions.
