Can a Realtor Enter My Apartment ?

by admin on

My landlord is selling the building (he never told me) I did look up the building on the internet and it is being sold by the Realtor contacting me.

They cannot show my apartment without me being in there , right ?

The landlord has to be with them while they are there , right ?

I changed my locks anyway a few years ago , so if I am not home they still will not be able to get in.

Whats to say someone asks for a walk through , sees which apartments have nobody home during the day , maybe unlock a window and come back and rob them.

Yes they need your approval before they can enter.

you need to ask fair housing your questions I do not know what the rules are in Illinois but in Calf, all they have to do is give you a 24 hour notice to enter. If your locks are changed they can call a locksmith and have the place opened and re-keyed if you did this with out permission.

You have to remember you are renting but the property belongs to the owner and the landlord. I know from experience that in the complex I lived at once the new owner took over they served everyone who did not let them in with a 30day notice. This is also with-in their rights because they saw they were trouble makers.

As for the walk though, they are not going to open up every-ones apartment with out this being a real qualified buyer, by the time you get to the point where they want to see eveyones place, they are in the "buying" process and not the "looking" process with loans and deposits already in place, so you will have to trust me no one is going to go though all of that trouble just to see if you are home or now during the day.

They will be accompanied by several people, the agent, the building landlord, the buyer and the appraiser. If this bothers you take the day off, but these people are professionals and are only looking in your place to make sure the investment is a sound one. They will be in and out in less then two minuets.. .Trust me.

the landlord or realtor must provide at least 12 hours notice. you do not have to be home at the time of the showing and your landlord does not have to be there either. Realtors are licensed professionals and are held to the conditions of that license.

You are probably going to get in trouble for changing the locks on the apartment and not informing the landlord. Most residential leases include a stipulation that the lease holder be provided a copy of entry locks.

Why would you want to sabotage your landlords ability to show his property? You could end up being evicted.

no one has to tell you that the apartment complex is being sold

they can show your apartment without you being there as long as the landlord or other apartment employee is there too- read your contract

you cannot legally change your locks without giving the landlord the key- if they find out? you will be responsible for the locksmith to come out and rechange them-
and if there was a fire or flood and they have to break the door down?
- you will have to pay for the door to be replaced

They must have your permission, preferably written.Unless you specify the landlord being there,he can just turn the keys over to the realtor.
My landlord did this to me at a place I rented(after 5 years) I changed the locks on Him and when He finally stopped screaming at me,I allowed Him to show the place once(and during that time I told His prospect about every problem on the property, plumbing, cracks,His makeshift concrete walkways he hurriedly put in.need less to say,He never did that(or asked me) again(he was even more pissed).
